Madhya Pradesh stuns Uttar Pradesh on way to semifinal
New Delhi, August 31: Madhya Pradesh booked a berth in the semifinals of the inaugural National Talent Search and Nurture football championship, conducted by the School Sports Promotion Foundation, with a stunning 3-1 victory over Uttar Pradesh at the Salwan Public School, Loni, near here today.
Madhya Pradesh had qualified as the second team from Group C while Uttar Pradesh had pumped in 18 goals in three league games.
In the other quarterfinal, Haryana took a 4-0 lead against Telangana when a torrential downpour left the ground waterlogged. Telangana opted to concede the match to Bihar instead of waiting to resume the contest. The ground staff at the Salwan Public School workd hard to ensure that the other quarterfinal could be played in the afternoon.
Madhya Pradesh did well to keep a check on Uttar Pradesh’s goal-hunters for a good part of half an hour before it took the lead through an Abhishek goal. Uttar Pradesh regrouped smartly and responded with a strike by Mohammed Saif. However, in the second half, Vipin Yadav and Anmol Singh found the target to help Madhya Pradesh sail into the last four stage.
The two quarterfinals between Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir and Bihar and Rajasthan, schedule to be played at DPS Ghaziabad, have been deferred by a day as the ground was flooded with rain water. The two matches will now be played at Salwan Public School, Loni, on Thursday morning ahead of the semifinals in the evening.
The final is slated for 1-00 p.m. on Friday, September 2 at the DDA Commonwealth Games Village Sports Complex in Akshardham.
