Does Height Matter For A Goalkeeper?

And, that’s how he saved a goal for SSPF. We should definitely give credit to his height, said the Doordarshan Journalist during the SSPF v/s BBFS match.

There is a perception among people that the football goalkeepers should be tall to perform well in the match. While there are many coaches who will talk about the right technique and height to save a goal, others consider height as one of the most essential factors that determines the effectiveness of a goalkeeper.

Attributes Of A Goalkeeper

Needless to mention, it is just a physical attribute, and won’t really matter in executing the skill. However, if we talk about real match situations, it becomes easier for the goalkeeper to save the goal.

Let’s have a look at the top skills/attributes a soccer goalkeeper should have which are as follows:-

Agility
Reflex
Footwork
Collection
Reading and understanding the game
Organizing the team
Communication
Diving technique
Catching technique
Punching technique
Ball control with feet
Right Timing
Vertical leap height
Reach

Right Balance of Height And Techniques

It is very important for a goalkeeper to have the right balance between the height and technique. If we talk about modern football, a goalkeeper should be both tall and technically sound. Good footwork allows a goalkeeper to cover the length of the goal rapidly and also creates a strong base for diving.

GEOMETRY OF A FULL SIZE SOCCER GOAL

Let’s talk about the geometry of a full size soccer goal.

Height: 2.44 m ( 8 ft)
Width: 7.32m ( 24 ft)

What this means is that if a goalkeeper is standing in the middle of the net and dive to the top corner, ~ 4.0 m (13 ft., 1 in.) will be the distance from hands to the corner. Would the few extra centimeters really matter? What about the leg strength, leaping ability and timing of the dive?

According to a recent report, a minimum height of a goalkeeper should be 1.80m ( 5 ft, 11in.) and the ideal height should be 1.90 m ( 6 ft, 3 in). There are many successful shorter goalkeepers, such as MEXICAN JORGE CAMPOS & COLUMBIAN RENE HIGUITA whose height is 1.75 m (5 ft., 9 in.)

CONCLUSION

What we consider is an entire package of mental, physical and technical attributes for a football goalkeeper and decides whether they should participate in the competition. Height cannot be the “only” factor to be a successful goalkeeper.

A successful goalkeeper should be able to stop the shots, make the right decision at the right team, and should know how to control the batter. These few attributes are more important than the height.

TIPS

• Try to spot the goalkeeper from a very early age.
• Do a little bit of research on the family ground and check the potential height in the future.
• Nurture the player.

Good height is definitely a coveted attribute but it doesn’t define the success for a goalkeeper. Determination to succeed, hard work on technique and development of leadership skills are keys to the top.

Good luck!

An Open Letter To Raj Kishore Mahto, Midfielder, Jharkhand, SSPF National Football Team 2016 !!

Dear 16 year old Mahto,

I have always been a little good with words but don’t get time to write much due to my hectic schedule. However, you have just forced me to write this. I was in the field doing the live telecast of the football match SSPF v/s BBFS, watching you doing magic with the ball, all by yourself. And I just want to tell you something, “You are simply great at it”. I am your 27 years old FAN.

I must tell you that I envied you when I saw you chasing the ball. I saw the spark in your eyes. I just felt that I lived my childhood in that single moment. It’s been so long that I have not thought about the KHO-KHO sessions of my school. I think that it was the awesome time of my childhood, but now when I am a professional I miss those days when we used to eagerly wait for our SPORTS DAY.

He is No.11

You know there’s always someone in life who reminds of your childhood days. You may call them your twin, or probably someone who shares the same level of energy, passion and excitement as soon as they are in the ground. I must admit that there were some extraordinary players in SSPF’s National Team 2016 and I even interviewed few of them during the Nationals. But, you were my favorite. I failed to make my fellow colleagues understand that why I am a fan of this Jharkhand guy.

You just reminded me of my childhood days. I shared the same energy, excitement and enthusiasm for everything, and that’s exactly why you are my favorite. I saw you playing against the great Bhaichung Bhutia. I saw a spark in your eyes. And those small innocent eyes with big dreams! I cannot ever forget them.

Mahto, I hope one day I will find you playing in Indian football team or something much bigger. I wish you get some great coaches to guide you. I wish you achieve everything. Keep playing with the ball because you have some serious fans who would love to cheer for you again and again. Keep playing because you owe it to yourself. Keep playing when nobody expects you to because you look alive when you do so.

I hope you never lose this happiness which you have found because there are many others who are still struggling, trying to sort out things even when they have everything. The pure happiness which I see in your face when you play football, I am grateful for it. More power to you Mahto!!

Yours truly,

A SSPF member
